Welcome to the Recollections of my Old Man!
Cartagena, historically referred to as Cartagena de Indias since the colonial period, is a prominent city and one of the principal ports situated on the northern coast of Colombia, in the Caribbean Coast Region along the Caribbean Sea.
The city's historical significance is derived from its role as a vital link in the trade route to the West Indies. As a former Spanish colony, Cartagena served as an important port for the export of Bolivian silver to Spain, as well as the activities in the importation of enslaved Africans through the Asiento system.
Today, Cartagena serves as the capital of the Bolívar Department, with a population of approximately one million, making it the second-largest city in the Caribbean region.
The experience of sailing into the port in the early morning was unexpected and fascinating, as these images illustrate, offering a truly spectacular view. Enjoy!
